Sharps and Flats

Each key signature has a different number of sharps or flats.

The order in which flats occur in key signatures is: Bb Eb Ab Db Gb Cb Fb

The order in which sharps occur in key signatures is: F# C# G# D# A# E# B#

Note: The order of sharps is the order of flats in reverse.
Memorize both.

Clockwise steps around the circle move the root up a perfect 5th and either add a sharp to the key signature or remove a flat from the key signature.

Counterclockwise steps around the circle move the root down a perfect 5th and either add a flat to the key signature or remove a sharp from the key signature.
